I’m wondering if I can qualify for an NIW EB-2. I’ve been a high school teacher for over 10 years in rural Texas, with a bachelor’s degree in science education. Over the years, I’ve supported club activities, mentored students to win medals in regional and state-level science competitions, received multiple Teacher Awards, and also developed online learning materials that have been valuable resource for students.

Hi there,

Your background is impressive, but I think that qualifying for an NIW EB-2 will depend on how well you connect your achievements to the three-prong test:

Highlight how your decade of teaching in underserved rural areas, mentoring students to win science competitions, and creating online materials contribute to “Merit and National Importance.”

Focus on proving you are well-positioned to advance this work, even without an advanced degree. You may need to strengthen your case by earning certifications, participating in curriculum projects, or engaging in professional development like conferences.

Keep in mind, the strength of your petition lies in aligning your work with national goals and presenting a clear, compelling case. Success depends on demonstrating significant impact and future potential.

Thanks so much for the tips, Rina! I’ll make sure to emphasize my contributions and clearly showcase my potential in this field. What’s the best way to collect strong recommendation letters? Do you have any suggestions?

Great question! To collect strong recommendation letters, I suggest reaching out to a diverse group of people who can emphasize your accomplishments from different perspectives. It’s important that the content of the letters doesn’t overlap too much. You’re the best person to draft the letters since you know what needs to be highlighted from each person’s position.

Send them the drafts and let them modify the content if they want or simply sign it. That’s how I handled all my letters, including my RFE letters—except for those from my former students. This approach ensures that the letters align with your goals while showcasing your unique strengths in various areas.
